requirements for entering the confirmation process

During the initial interview, applicants will be quizzed on the following basic information. Students must have a working knowledge of this information. If the student shows a need for instruction in this basic area, he/she will be required to take the basic course in Catholicism before proceeding to the Confirmation Level Courses.

The student should be able to:

Make the Sign of the Cross

Say the Lord's Prayer/Hail Mary/Glory Be to the Father/The Apostles' Creed.

Name the Seven Sacraments-and know which they have received:

  • Baptism
  • Confirmation
  • Eucharist
  • Penance
  • Matrimony
  • Holy Orders
  • Anointing of the Sick

Name the Ten Commandments (not necessarily in order) See Exodus 20:1-17.

Identify the Liturgical Seasons:

  • Advent
  • Christmas
  • Ordinary Times
  • Lent
  • Easter
  • Pentecost

Know the following terms:

  • Incarnation (God made flesh)
  • Resurrection (Jesus raised from the Dead)
  • Immaculate Conception (Mary conceived without sin)
  • Pentecost (Sending of the Holy Spirit)
  • Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday)

Know the Persons of the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Know where Jesus was born (Bethlehem) and where he died (Jerusalem):

  • know how long he lived (33 years)
  • know that he was a Jew, faithful to the Jewish Law
  • know that the Incarnation is the celebration of his birth
  • know his early parents (Mary and Joseph); be able to tell one miracle that he performed.

Identify the two major divisions of the Bible:

  • Old and New Testament Name the four Evangelists/Gospels:
    Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
  • Know the names of first and last books of the Bible: Genesis and Revelation
  • Know that St. Paul is the writer of the letters in the New Testament

Know the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Long-suffering, Benignity, Mildness, Faith or Fidelity, Modesty, Continence, Chastity

Know the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and the fear of the Lord
