Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary was founded in Dublin, Ireland in September 1921. It is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church. It was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council and approved by the last six Popes. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the holiness of its members, which is developed by prayer and active cooperation in Mary's and the Church's work.

The Legion prioritize the spiritual and social welfare of each individual. Personal holiness is sought by each members by attempting to imitate Mary in her virtues of faith, charity and humility. Each member is required to carry out a weekly apostolic work in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary. Members visit families: the sick, in their homes and in hospitals. Other examples include prison ministry, religious education, Our Lady of Fatima Statue home visits, leading rosary and communion services at Nursing Homes & Assisted Living Centers, distributing Catholic literature, First Saturday Devotions, Holy Hour of Reparation. Legionaires are under the guidance of a spiritual director.

A praesidium is a unit of the Legion of Mary, which holds weekly meeting of prayer intermingled with reports and discussion.  Persons interested in joining the Legion of Mary must apply for membership in a Praesidium. This unit of St. Benedict's Parish meets each Thursday, 6:30 pm at the church.
